Mandate

  • Measurements of growth for computing volume and finding the development of crop stands, for different species, in different quality classes and in different climatic zones of the state.
  • Designing of experiment and analysis of data for all branches of the Institute.

The branch carries out the measurements of growth for computing volume and finding the development of crop stands, for different species, in different quality classes and in different agro-climatic zones of the state. Besides it the branch also performs designing of experiment and analysis of data for all branches of the Institute. On the basis of growth data collected from the field yield tables, volume tables, form factor tables and growth tables are prepared and provided to various forest divisions for forest management purpose. Along with these research activities training for crop measurement to the forestry personnel is also imparted.

Regular activities

Maintenance and measurement of sample plots

Sample plot is a plot chosen as a representative of a larger area. These are used mainly to study growth of stands and to study effects of certain treatments. Depending on the object, the plots may be temporary or permanent. While temporary sample plots are laid for measurements that are carried out once only, permanent sample plots are laid out for measurements to be repeated at intervals over a period of time. Permanent sample plots are designed for preparation of yield tables and are measured for determination of crop volume and crop increment at all stages of development of even aged crops, comparison of growth in different localities measuring the effects of certain treatments such as grades and intensity of thinning, application of fertilizer etc. Periodical measurements of 59 sample plots as per schedule are carried out in the field and crop parameters are calculated and used in preparation of growth tables.

Services

  • Mensuration branch prepares the local volume tables for different site qualities, on the basis of local volume equations based upon only one parameter, i.e. girth at breast height (GBH). These volume tables based on one independent variable i.e. dbh or gbh, are derived from the measurements of trees growing in a restricted geographical area or locality, or more or less uniform crop. These are, therefore, applicable to such restricted range of locality or geographical areas, only where the assumption that the trees of the same diameter will have the same height, holds good. Fee structure, at present is, Rs. 25,000 per division for each species.

  • Consultancy services
Consultancy services are available for analysis of bulk data for government and private sectors.

Other significant achievements:

Provided statistical support in designing and data analysis the following projects:

  1. Selection of suitable species on the basis of growth performance of established plantations and development of nursery techniques to increase green cover under Green India Mission (GIM) in western Madhya Pradesh.
  2. Study and comparison of soil cultural practices in existing bamboo (Dendrocalamus strictus) plantations in Kalpi, Mandla Forest Division.
