Major Achievements

A number of important research activities have been undertaken by the branch which are highlighted below

Non timber forest products(NTFPs) :

Pioneering work has been done since 1988. Initially, a publication of Socio economic potential of minor forest produce(1991) estimated the quantum of various NTFPs collected, their socio economic potential as per their classification for Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

Separate studies on important NTFPs like tendu leaves, Mahul leaves, medicinal plants like Safed musli, baibirang, Mahua, Chironji, Aonla, etc. were undertaken. Experiment on yield cycle of Sal seed, problems of rural women in collection of NTFPs grading and storage practices for NTFPs.

Market Information Service for medicinal Plants:

The project commenced in 2001 with aim to help rural communities with market prices of medicinal plants including NTFPs. It was funded by National Medicinal Plants Board and MP MFP Cooperative Federation, Bhopal. Lately five regional market Analysis Centres at Bhopal, Chhindwara, Indore, Katni and Shivpuri were established market information on products, prices, demand-supply, market structure, value chain analysis, etc are done. A quarterly Newsletter Van Dhan Vyapar is being published since 15 years. This project covers 93 NTFPs in all important markets of M.P and C.G from primary markets to terminal markets.

Social Impact assessment:

  • Studies on Socio-economic impact assessment have been done in a number of opencast and U.G coal mine areas like Dhanpuri O.CM, Dudhichua, Churcha U.G, Pandavpura, etc.
  • Impact assessment of WFP Food assessment and assets created through generated funds in Madhya Pradesh.
  • Social and economic assessment of Joint Forest Management

Evolving technology for harvesting and processing and driage of important NTFPs.

  • Processing and driage protocols have been standardized for 36 NTFPs and training given to village level communities.
  • Sustainable harvesting techniques have been standardized for three gum yielding species via. Boswelia serrata, Sterculia urens and Butea monosperma.

Studies on tribal communities:

  • Spatial changes in forest and its impact on the economy of baigas.
  • Socio economic study of Basods in Mandla district.

Archive Section:

Some very old records of M.P. State Forest Department were recovered from record room of S.F.R.I., library and documentation section. These records/books/ maps/Journals/documents pertain to the period from the year 1861 onwards when the forest department was established.

A software was designed for uploading of digitized data in different sub heads like Annual research reports, technical bulletins, proceedings of forest Advisory Committee meetings research papers, etc. The following records/reports bulletins and proceeding were digitized.

Services

  • Marketing information services for NTFPs
  • Collection Processing, Harvesting, demonstration of NTFPs, Gums and Lac.

Research Summaries

  • Sustainable harvesting and primary processing of gums and gum oleo resin in M. P.
  • Preservation and Digitization of research records of SFRI
  • Development of storage systems in archive record rooms of State Forest Research Institute
  • Training on technical know how of gum tapping from Butea monosperma in Umaria and Tikamgarh districts to local people and frontline staff of forest department
  • Valuation of forest resources and its accounting: a casestudy of South Balaghat Forest Division

1. Sustainable harvesting and primary processing of gums and gum oleo resin in M. P.

The project objective was to assess current status of gums evolve sustainable harvesting storage technology for four gum yielding species and to disseminate technology to gum collectors. Field survey were done in seven districts by laying sample plots of 50 X 50 m, 10 X 10 m and 1 X 1 m for tree enumeration and estimating regenerating status.

The field survey revealed that intensity of harvesting Sterculia urens and Boswellia serrata was high in Sheopur district whereas, on Butea monosperma it was reported high in Umaria district Village level survey revealed that gums are an important source of income and livelihood in the drier forest regions. Sustainable harvesting techniques for Butea monosperm, Boswellia serrata and Sterculia urens were evolved after applying a number of different treatment.

Three trainings were given to the gum collectors on sustainable harvesting, primary processing, storage, grading value addition and marketing techniques of Boswellia serrata, Sterculia urens and Anogeissus latifolia. A book also published "Gums and resin yielding plants" . National Workshop on Sustainable management of natural gums and resins was organised in which 31 research papers were presented.

2. Preservation and Digitization of research records of SFRI

SFRI has old research records and grey literature which needed to be preserved and digitized, for easy availability. All old research reports, RAC proceedings, Technical bulletins, Research papers etc were digitized. The following works were done in the project.

Digitized Records

A software was designed and all digitized records were appended under different sub heads for use. Thereafter collection of old SFRI reports/bulletins/RAC proceedings/old research papers in Journals was also done. These records were then listed, cleaned, repaired and digitized.

3. Development of storage systems in archive record rooms of State Forest Research Institute

  • Storage systems installed in two Archive record rooms and one lab.
  • Archive rooms have been upgraded.
  • Listing of old records of Forests Dept and SFRI completed.

4. Training on technical know how of gum tapping from Butea monosperma in Umaria and Tikamgarh districts to local people and frontline staff of forest department.

To impart training on sustainable harvesting, processing and marketing of Butea monosperma Six trainings were given in Umaria and Tikamgarh districts as given below:

These districts were affected by high intensity of harvesting which was unsustainable. After training in the intensity harvesting will decline to safer level.

5. Valuation of forest resources and its accounting: a case study of South Balaghat Forest Division

Objectives

  • To undertake a specific study for forest valuation and resource accounting of contribution of forests at division level.
  • To suggest a method and framework for adopting an improved Forest Resource Accounting (FRA) system.

The extent of unrecorded for the division was Rs. 61.81 crores. The study undertook accounting of recorded and unrecorded removals from the Forest Division .
