Sample plot is a plot chosen as a representative of a larger area. These are used mainly to study growth of stands and to study effects of certain treatments. Depending on the object, the plots may be temporary or permanent. While temporary sample plots are laid for measurements that are carried out once only, permanent sample plots are laid out for measurements to be repeated at intervals over a period of time. Permanent sample plots are designed for preparation of yield tables and are measured for determination of crop volume and crop increment at all stages of development of even aged crops, comparison of growth in different localities measuring the effects of certain treatments such as grades and intensity of thinning, application of fertilizer etc. Periodical measurements of 59 sample plots are carried out in the field and crop parameters are calculated and used in preparation of growth tables.
