Candidate Plus Trees

Having identified the best provenance suited for a locality, the tree to tree variation can be exploited for the selection of outstanding individuals called “Candidate Plus trees”. Candidate plus trees are outstanding individuals that occur in natural stands or in even aged stands. They exhibit one or more desirable characteristics or traits. Such trees occur in low frequency and so special efforts are needed to locate them. These trees form the foundation for the improvement by selection. There are some general methods for the selection of candidate plus trees, as candidate plus trees are generally selected on the basis of their external appearance (phenotypic characters) and are capable of transmitting their good traits to their progeny. Candidate plus trees which are approved as good on the basis of a progeny test are known as “elite” trees or Plus Trees. Under Indo-Danish project during 1972-73 Candidate Plus Tree of Teak have been identified in different forest divisions of old Madhya Pradesh. So far, 353 CPTs of Teak have been identified on the basis of their phenotypic traits. 150 CPTs are existed which need to be convert into plus trees using molecular techniques. A part from this, CPTs of miscellaneous forestry species such as Haldu, Beeja, Tinsa, Dhaman, Achar and Shisham has also been identified in different forest divisions of M.P.
