Clonal Teak Seed Orchard

Clonal Seed orchards are plantations of genetically superior trees established for the specific purpose of mass production of improved seed. A seed orchard is established in an area suitable for the species but away from natural stands and other plant stands of the same species so as to prevent contamination by pollens from inferior trees. Clonal orchard method of producing genetically improved planting stock for raising plantations is so far the most widely practiced approach in forest tree improvement in all the countries. Clonal orchards can be established by grafting the bud material on root shoot stock taken from elite trees. The orchards are managed intensively to produce regular and abundant crops of sound seeds that can be harvested easily. So far Teak clonal seed orchards over on area of 162 ha. have been established during 1977 & in 1992-93 in different forest division of Madhya Pradesh.
